What Is Truth

This essay was written for a friend of mine who asked me about the nature of Truth. He was  not alone; Pontius Pilate asked “what is truth?”. My one-word answer? Jesus. Every truthful thing in the universe can be found in Jesus the Logos. Wisdom, Truth, and Knowledge originate in Jesus (implied in John 14:6). Truth is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. The Logos is absolute, rock solid, eternal truth. “I am the Lord thy God – I change not” (Malachi 3:6).

2 Corinthians 10:5 (paraphrased) tells us – We use scripture and wisdom to demolish arguments and every pretense the foolish use against the knowledge of God within us, and the Spirit takes captive of every thought we have, gradually bringing our inner self into obedience with Christ.

In the Old Testament we find the Hebrew term “Emet, H571” used to convey “truth.”  Vines Hebrew dictionary tells us this Hebrew word is used 127 times in the Old Testament. In addition to being translated as ‘truth’ it is sometimes translated as ‘right’ or ‘faithful.’ Emet means more than just a part of truth or conditional truth. Emet means the whole, entire, unchanging, everlasting, unbound truth. Emet is spelled Aleph, Mem, and Taw (Hebrew letters). Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet; Taw is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Most scholars agree that the Hebrew alphabet was created with letters that are both visual and phonetic. It is no accident the ancients chose the spelling for the word Emet to visually define truth as the beginning and the end of all knowledge and wisdom from God. Think about this – the beginning of truth is God; the outer limit of truth is God. Everything we know originates from his truth. He is the center mass for all knowledge. This is what Truth is.

Jesus says – “I am the Alpha and Omega, first and the last, the Beginning and the End.” (Paraphrased from Revelation 1:8, 21:6, 22:13) Do not overlook this connection – Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet. When the disciples asked Jesus to show them “the way,” he said, “I am the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6). “In Christ,” Paul states, “all the riches of the Godhead dwells bodily” and in him also “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” are hidden (implied in Colossians 2:9-13). Paul did not want us to be deceived by “fine-sounding” philosophical “arguments” (Colossians 2:3-9), but that we would find all truth in Jesus. This truth is not an abstract idea hanging in the atmosphere experienced via a mystical setting accessed only when we force or contrive the encounter. Truth is embodied in a person – Jesus. Truth occurs 24/7. The Holy Spirit, who is the “Spirit of wisdom and revealer of truth” leads us to the Truth Incarnate (Ephesians 1:17).

What do we do with this information? This truth we are talking about spreads into every area of life. Truth upholds and sustains our universe (Hebrews 1:3 and 1:10). This truth enables and fuels our walk with God (Micah 6:8). Truth protects us from trouble. Truth is the ‘great equalizer’ when the path is not clear. Truth is a blazing light in the middle of the night when we are afraid. Truth leads to honesty, honesty leads to peace with self, others, and our God. I choose the one true living God – I choose the middle letter ‘mem’, the waters of wisdom that anchor’s all Truth before creation and beyond time.  He is the living center mass of all truth.

I choose Jesus.
