OmniScience Of God

It was my observation while reading Isaiah 40:13-14; God is saying — who has directed the Spirit of the Lord or been his counselor or has taught Him? With whom did He take counsel and who instructed him and taught Him in the path of judgment and taught Him knowledge and showed him the way of understanding? Who knows more than God? Do you know anyone? I think not! (NIV)

While musing over this passage, I could not help but note the subtle definition of Omniscience one of God’s primary attributes (an all-knowing being). Isaiah is clearly stating God never learned anything from anyone – any time – any place – under any circumstances. He already knows everything that can possibly be reasoned, identified, seen, tasted, felt, or heard. Paul echo’s this idea with – “Who hath known the mind of the Lord or who hath been his counselor” (Romans 11:34)

AW Tozer tells us – To say that God is omniscient is to say that he possesses perfect knowledge and therefore he has no need to learn but there is more: we are saying that God has never learned and cannot learn. Could God at any time or in any manner receive into His mind information that He did not already own and had not ever held since the beginning. Would he not be imperfect or less than himself if he took on new knowledge?

We marvel at the balancing of the clouds and the “wondrous works of Him who is perfect” in knowledge (Job 37:16 paraphrased). Clearly the amazing knowledge of God is reflected in the creation He has made. Yet, His creation does not set boundaries for His knowledge. We note in Psalms — He “counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them. Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite” (implied in Psalms 147:4-5).

God knows all things (implied in 1 John 3:20). The breadth of his knowledge is absolutely endless; He knows every possible item of knowledge, He knows everything we will discover in the ages to come, and He knows everything we have discovered in ages past, plus He knows all the things we will never discover because we do not know what we do not know.  For He looks to the end of the earth and sees everything under the heavens (implied in Job 28:24). Nothing is hidden from Him.

It is clear from the preceding scripture there is nothing left for Him to discover. There are no surprises or new things for Him, he does not need to study something to learn more, because He knows it already. This amazing attribute defines why the foreknowledge of God is so comforting. For “He knows the secrets of our heart” (Psalms 44:21) Therefore, with God, there are no secrets – nothing surprises God.

“As for you, serve the God of your father with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him” (1 Chronicles 28:9 paraphrased).

The deeper truth — there never will be an accuser who reveals our secrets to God at the most damaging time in our life. God already knows. We are redeemed (yesterday, today, and tomorrow). We are safe, He has a plan, He loves us, He knows the outcome. The one true living God is omniscience.

I choose Jesus.
