Some days, when I head out for my morning walkabout, I look north at the Catalina Mountains; I am reminded of Psalm 121 – “to whom do I look, where do I look, what will I see?” In those hills I see and hear the voice of God who is talking to me. Of all the things that I have written about, His infinite nature is immensely challenging. Everything we know, feel, smell, see and imagine has limits and boundaries. I suspect the notion of infinite is a bit contradictory to the way that we process information. But try we must, for scriptures is noticeably clear that God is infinite. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts (implied in Isaiah 55:9); God has no boundaries, no limits – Period.
To properly grasp the infinite God, we must find a way to unfetter our mind. While hanging out in college I learned that a line is a series of dots organized in an extremely specific way to form the edge of a plane in a three-dimensional world (you may recall a Plane is similar in structure to a piece of paper). Consider this, when we say God is infinite, we are saying his life goes on forever. That means there is always one more dot to place at the end of that line which will expand the size of the plane. Now, consider a stack of planes, each plane contains one thing we assign to God such as love, righteousness, mercy, kindness, etc. Then permit the size of each plane to be infinite in the same way that the depth of God’s love, righteousness, mercy, or other aspects of God are infinite. And then… allow the stack of planes (like a stack of papers) to be endless in height. This is a human concept to be sure; but it moves my thoughts towards the notion of an infinite God using three dimensional terms. This concept builds upon the love of Jesus. Though it is hard to understand; He makes us complete with the infinite fullness of His life. (Ephesians 3:19 paraphrased).
Our language was designed to describe a finite world. I think we must dip down into that deep groaning of the Spirit of God during prayer to even approach the notion of defining the infinite. That groaning is one of the few places where our language stops, and He starts. Yet, even in prayer, our effort is feeble.
The notion of infinite can legitimately only be assigned to one thing in this universe. Only one thing. God. Because God’s nature is infinite, it has no boundaries, everything that flows out of his nature is unlimited, unbound, unfettered, infinite. The one true living infinite God.
This is how things work for the infinite God. He is never in a hurry. He has no deadlines. There is no one overseeing his activities, no one holding him to a schedule. God’s power is unlimited. He needs no teachers to guide or correct him. Others praise God for what He has done, so we join with them! (Job 36:22-24 paraphrased). God alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light. No man has seen or can see the face of God – To Him be honor and eternal dominion! (implied in 1 Timothy 6:16). God is fully in control. His mercy is endless.
He is steady, kind, patient, gentle, and wise. Literally, he owns everything on Earth and He owns all the time existent to help us through our struggles and to help us get back to the business of His kingdom. What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined is our God (paraphrased from 1 Corinthians 2:9). Great is our Lord, abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite (Psalms 147:5).
God is. We yield. Cool stuff happens.
I choose Jesus.
