Jesus Teaches About Salt and Light

Many, many people wanted to hear Jesus speak. He went to the side of a hill and sat down so that everyone could gather around and listen. Then he began to tell them how they could follow God. He told them about heaven. He told them they should be kind to other people even if other people were not kind to them. He told them that they should help poor people and that they should not judge others.

To help people understand something very important, Jesus told them a parable.

Jesus looked at the people and said, “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.”

What do you think Jesus meant? Do you think he was saying that we are not human, but we are salt instead? Of course not. Jesus was saying something very important, but he was trying to make it simple to understand. He was using the example of salt.

Do you like salt? What does food taste like when there is no salt in it?  When salt is added to some foods they taste much better. God put Christians in this world so that we can make the world better. Are you salt? Do you make this world better?

After Jesus told the people the parable about the salt he told them another parable.

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

What do you think Jesus meant when he said: “You are the light of the world”? Did he mean we are not human but that we are light bulbs? Of course not. He was saying a parable to tell the people something very important.

Many people in this world do not know about God. Jesus said that it is like they are in a very dark place. They need someone to give them some light so that they can see. When Christians obey God then it is like a light is shining. People see Christians doing good things and it makes them want to follow God.

If we do good things, it is like our light is shining. If people never see us do or say good things, then it is like we are putting a big bowl over our light. No one can see a light under a bowl.

Sometimes we get embarrassed or shamed and we don’t want people to know that we are Christians. Has that ever happened to you? If we are ashamed to do good things, then it is like putting our light under a bowl.

How many of you are going to let your light shine this week?

O’Toole and Mr. Foreman

One morning when O’Toole woke up, he heard a clatter outside.   He jumped out of bed and ran to the window. Across the street there was an empty lot with a high fence around it. He had looked at this empty lot many times but there was never anything very interesting in the lot. But today it was different.

From his bedroom window O’Toole could see a great big steam shovel digging in the dirt.  He could see the steam shovel dumping the dirt into big trucks.   Then he saw dump trucks that were full of dirt leaving the lot.  More empty trucks were coming into the lot.  He also saw a Workman going back and forth.  The workmen were moving things around.  The workmen were stacking up bricks. All kinds of interesting things were happening across the street.  O’Toole could see it all from his bedroom window.

O’Toole was busy watching the steam shovel, the dump trucks, and the workmen.  He did not notice his mother calling him.

O’Toole’s mother said to O’Toole — What are you watching out your window?

O’Toole answered – I am looking at the dump trucks in the empty lot across the street.

O’Toole’s mother said – Goodness, you’re not dressed yet. We need to get you dressed and downstairs. You need to eat some breakfast. The machines are building a nice new building on that empty lot. Let us get dressed so you can go downstairs.  Then you can watch them while you play.

After breakfast O’Toole ran back up to his bedroom. He opened the window so he could hear all of the noise. Clang bang boom roar. It was so exciting.  He watched the steam shovel dig deep into the ground. He watched the dump trucks rumble in and wait.  The steam shovel filled them up with all that fresh dirt. He watched the dump trucks drive out the lot.  They went way down the street. O’Toole was very happy. But then his mother came into O’Toole’s room.

His mother said — O’Toole you can’t stay in your room all day. It’s time for you to go outside into the sunshine and play with the other children.

O’Toole said — OK mother, I can do that. I’ll watch the machines from downstairs on the porch.

O’Toole went downstairs and sat on his porch but he could not see past the big fence. Guess what he did.  He looked both ways and then ran across the street to get closer to the fence.

O’Toole said — I still cannot see the steam shovel. I cannot see the dump trucks. I cannot see the workman. All I can see is a high fence.

O’Toole ran to the gate where the big trucks were going in and out of the empty lot. He could see now. Then a man came to him and stood right in front of him.  Oh My!

Mr. Foreman said – Please go away little boy. It’s not safe for you to be around here. You cannot stay here.

O’Toole said– but I’m so little. I can’t see over your big fence. I want to see the machines and the men doing their work.

O’Toole started praying that God would give him a place where he could see all the activity and be safe.

He looked at the fence and looked for a place where he could peek under the fence. But that did not work. Mr. Foreman came back.

Mr. Foreman said — Little boy you are still not in a safe place. Please go home. You cannot stay here.

O’Toole looked around and prayed again for God to give him a place that was safe so he could watch the machines.  He found an old drainpipe by the fence and stood on top of that drainpipe. But that did not work. He found an old box and stood up on top of that box. But that did not work. Then Mr. Foreman came back again.

Mr. foreman said — Little boy you really need to go home. You cannot climb here. You cannot watch from here.  You need to be where it is safe. You are so small. It would be very easy for my men to not see you and then something bad could happen. Please go home.

O’Toole prayed again for God to give him away to watch that would be safe.  Then an idea came to O’Toole.  I will go home and get my drill.  I will make a hole in the fence where it’s safe.  Then I can watch all of the work getting done. So, O’Toole went home and got his drill.  He came back to the fence and drilled the hole. Once again Mr. Foreman came by to the place where O’Toole was standing.  His concern for O’Toole’s safety was showing on his face.

Mr. Foreman said — Little boy what are you doing now?

O’Toole said — I have drilled the hole in the fence so that I can watch safely.

Mr. Foreman replied — That’s a very good idea little boy.   Please let me help you out.

Mr. Foreman walked away to his pickup truck.  He came back with a big drill.  Mr. Foreman drilled a really big hole in the fence.  Now O’Toole could easily watch the men work. It was safe. Mr. Foreman was happy.  O’Toole was happy.

Then one of O’Toole’s friends came by and wanted to look through the hole at the same time. Mr. Foreman came back with his drill.  He made another hole in the fence for O’Toole’s friend. Then Mr. Foreman made several holes in the fence so that many people could watch what was going on safely.

Mr. Foreman said to O’Toole — Little boy, your prayer was answered. God told me to make a way for you to be able to see things safely. Now we have done that. It is a good day.  O’Toole wondered how Mr. Foreman knew about the prayer.  O’Toole asked his mother about prayer.

O’Toole’s mother said – God always hears our prayer.  God can talk to anyone to get things done.  He told Mr. Foreman to drill the hole and help you be safe.  I am glad you were praying.  God answered.

The End.

Noah and the Ark

Once upon a time, there was a man named Noah.

Noah was a good and righteous man who always did what was right, and this pleased God.

However, not everyone in the world was like Noah.

One day, God looked down at the world and saw that the people were being very wicked and not taking care of the earth. God decided to do something about it.

God told Noah to build a big boat called an ark and then gather two of every kind of animal, one male and one female, to bring with them onto the ark.

God explained that he was going to send a great flood to cleanse the earth, and the ark would keep Noah, his family, and all the animals safe.

Noah and his family toiled away for many years, working really hard to build the ark.

They made sure to follow God’s instructions and made the ark very strong. They also collected enough food for themselves and the animals, which they would need during the flood.

Once the ark had been completed, Noah, his family and all the animals went inside.

As soon as Noah and his family were safely in the ark, it began to rain. And then it rained and rained for forty days and forty nights.

Eventually, the floodwater covered the entire world, but the ark floated on the water keeping everyone dry.

Being cooped up in the ark like that, it must have felt as if the rain was going to last forever, but Noah and his family trusted God. They took care of the animals and waited for the rain to stop.

After forty days, the rain did finally stop, and so Noah sent out a dove to try and find dry land. The dove quickly returned, but after seven days, the dove was sent out again. This time the dove came back with a freshly plucked olive leaf in its beak, which meant there must be dry land nearby.

Noah and his family were so happy, they knew the flood was almost over.

When God told them it was time to leave the ark, they opened the doors. Noah’s family and the animals stepped out onto dry land.

They were happy and grateful to God for saving them.

God then made a promise to Noah that He would never send such a big flood again.

As a sign of His promise, God put a beautiful rainbow in the sky. And from that day on, whenever it rains and a rainbow appears, people remember God’s love and faithfulness.

Man Lowered Through the Roof

When Jesus came to a house in the city of Capernaum many people wanted to come and listen to him. Many people came to the house to hear him preach and the house was so packed with people that there was not even room to stand inside. Some people even had to stand outside and listen through the doors and windows.

One man that wanted to come and hear Jesus was very disappointed. This man was paralyzed and could not walk. Four of his friends had to carry him on a mat. The man and his friends could not get inside the house where Jesus was preaching.

But the four men did not give up. They were determined to get their friend inside that house to listen to Jesus. What could they do?

Houses in those days had flat roofs that were made of clay and straw. They usually had stairs on the outside so people could climb on the roof to get some fresh air. The men had an idea. Maybe they could somehow get inside the house through the roof.

So, the men climbed onto the top of the roof carrying the paralyzed man. Then they started pulling off the clay and straw to make an opening.

The men kept pulling off clay and straw and soon the hole became as big as a man. Now it was time for their plan!

The people inside must have been very curious to see a hole appear in the ceiling. They could probably see the blue sky from inside the dark house. Soon something started appearing through the hole – it was a mat with a man on it! The man’s friends had lowered him down through the hole so that he ended up right in front of Jesus!

Jesus was impressed by all the trouble these men had gone to get him inside the house. He knew they must really want to hear the words he was saying. When Jesus saw their great faith he said to the paralyzed man, “Young man, your sins are forgiven.”

The man must have been happy to hear Jesus say that his sins were forgiven. But even though this man was happy there were some people who were not happy at all. The teachers of the law were always watching Jesus and checking to see if he made mistakes. They did not speak out loud, but they thought to themselves, “Why does this man say things like that? He is saying things that are against God. Only God can forgive sins.”

These teachers of the law only thought these things. People cannot hear thoughts that we have. People can only hear words that we say out loud with our voice. Only God can know what we are thinking before we speak words.

But Jesus is different from other people. What a shock to these men when he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to tell this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to tell him, ‘Stand up. Take your mat and walk’? Watch me now. I will prove to you that I have the authority on earth to forgive sins.”

So, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, stand up. Take your mat and go home.”

Immediately the paralyzed man stood up. He took his mat and walked out while everyone was watching him.

The man was happy. First, his sins had been forgiven and now, he could walk! All the people were amazed and praised God. They had seen a miracle take place. Jesus must have the power of God! Everyone was saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

And what about the man’s friends? If they had not had faith they would have given up. They might have left without finding a way to bring their friend to Jesus.

And how about you? Will you be the kind of person that will bring your friends to hear about Jesus?

Jesus is Tempted in the Wilderness

We cannot see God, but we know he is always near us. He helps us and takes care of us. He always wants us to do the right things so we will be happy. He wants us to come live with him when we die.

We cannot see Satan, but he is alive too. He is very bad. He tries to get us to do bad things. He does not want us to go to heaven when we die. Heaven is a happy place where God lives. Satan wants us to go to a bad place called hell. No one is ever happy in hell because God is never there.

Temptation:

Sometimes we want to do the wrong thing. Wanting to do the wrong thing is called “temptation.”

Sometimes we know to do something good, but we want to just forget about it and not do it. When we feel like not doing something that we know is good that is also temptation.

Temptation is when bad and wrong things look really good to us. Satan tempts us. He hates it when we are good, so he tries to make bad things seem good to us. Sometimes he makes them look so good that we forget what God says and just do the bad thing.

After Jesus was baptized, he went away to the desert to be alone. He decided that he wanted to pray and think about God for 40 days. Jesus did not want to be distracted by anything, so he fasted.

To fast means to not eat so that even our bodies make us think about God every time we feel hungry. Jesus fasted and did not eat for 40 days when he was in the desert.

Satan did not like it because Jesus only thought about God. Satan hated it that Jesus was so good all the time. He decided to tempt Jesus and try to make him do bad things. Satan came to Jesus and tempted him in three ways.

Temptation 1: Satan knew Jesus was really hungry, so he tempted Jesus to use his powers in a selfish way all for himself. Satan said, “If you are really the Son of God then use your special powers to turn these stones into bread.”

Jesus was hungry but he knew that God wanted him to only use his special powers to help people. His power was not just for feeding himself! Jesus wanted to do the right thing. He knew the best way to answer Satan was to use God’s words. Jesus had memorized a lot of scriptures, so he knew exactly which scripture to say to Satan. He said this verse from the Bible, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Temptation 2: Next, Satan took Jesus to Jerusalem to the temple. Both Jesus and Satan knew that the temple was a special place to God.

They stood at the highest point of the temple. Satan wanted to get Jesus to doubt God’s power. He told Jesus that he should give God a test to see if his power worked. Satan told Jesus to jump off the temple and see if God’s angels would catch him.

But Jesus did not need to give God a test. Jesus already knew that God’s power was stronger than anything in the world. Jesus told Satan another Scripture from God’s word. “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”

Temptation 3: You would think that Satan would have learned his lesson, but he REALLY wanted Jesus to mess up. Maybe Satan thought, “If only I can get Jesus to do things MY way, then I will be more important to him than God is.”

So, Satan had one more thing he could do to tempt Jesus. Maybe this time he could get Jesus to sin. Satan took Jesus to the top of a very high mountain. They could see the whole world from the top of the mountain.

So, Satan said, “You say you love all the people of the world. You say you want them to go to heaven. How about a deal? I will help all the people of the world go to heaven if you will just do one simple thing. All you have to do is to bow down and worship me instead of God.”

Do you think Jesus gave in to this temptation? No! Jesus had had enough. He told Satan to go away. Of course he would never worship Satan! Jesus loved God. He would only worship God. Jesus quoted from the Old Testament one more time, “Worship the Lord you God, and serve him only.”

Then Satan left Jesus. Angels came and helped take care of Jesus after that.

Do you think Satan gave up trying to tempt Jesus? No, he did not give up. Over the next 3 years Satan tried again and again to tempt Jesus but Jesus never did wrong.

God understands that temptation is very difficult. It was even hard for Jesus.

Sometimes we are tempted to do the wrong thing too. God understands Satan’s sneaky tricks and he can help us say “no” to temptation. We need to remember God’s true words just like Jesus did.

O’Tool, Hank the Tank, and the Yellow Curtains

It was late in the evening, O’Toole was getting ready for sleep, Hank the tank was in the room making a circle in his favorite spot. O’Toole’s mother came in to wish him a good night.

O’Toole asked his mother — Can you tell me the story about yellow curtains again? I like hearing stories about you when you were a little girl.

O’Toole’s mother said — yes, I can tell you that story but then you have to go to sleep.

Hank the Tank said — oh yes please tell this story.

O’Toole’s mother started… If you asked my friend Carlie where she lived, she would say not in the city and not in the country. I live in a place just right between the city and the country. I live in a house on River Road.

The house Carlie lived in was not too big and it was not too little. The house was just right. Carlie had her own bedroom. Not many of her friends had their own bedroom but she did.

Now, right down the road from my friend Carlie in a beautiful White House lived Mr. Bill. He was a very nice man who worked all the time in the neighborhood.  Mr. Bill was a fix-it man. There seemed to be nothing that Mr. Bill could not make or fix. All the neighbors came to see Mr. Bill when they had something that needed to be done.

Mr. Bill and Carlie were very good friends. Sometimes Carlie’s mother would let her ride into town with Mr. Bill in his truck. She loved to go to downtown Tucson and look at all of the pretty buildings. Sometimes Mr. Bill would let Carlie go with him on a fix-it job in the neighborhood.

One day, Carlie saw Mr. Bill drive up to his house with wood in his truck.  She knew he was going out to fix something.

She ran over to him smiling and said — Hello Mr. Bill, what’s the wood for?

Mr. Bill said to Carlie — I’m going to make a doghouse for Mr. Brown’s house.

Carlie asked Mr. Bill — can I go with you please?

Mr. Bill laughed and said – Go ask your mom if it is ok.

Carlie’s mom was ok with the plan, Mr. Bill and Carlie drove up the street just a few houses and stopped at Mr. Brown’s house.

Carlie asked Mr. Bill — can you make any kind of doghouse?

Mr. Bill thought about it for a minute and said — well if you can draw a picture of it, I can make it.

Carlie found some paper and drew a very nice picture.

Carlie replied — Here is the picture, please make this one a pretty one.

Mr. Bill said to Carlie – well, I need to make this house look the way that Mr. Brown wants. After all, this doghouse is going to be owned by Mr. Brown. But just for you I will make you a pretty one also.

Carlie watched Mr. Bill make the doghouse. All the time she was thinking about how pretty the doghouse would be if it had a yellow door and yellow curtains.

Later that week, Mr. Bill had a job to do for Mr. Morris. Mr. Bill was going to make a hen house for Mr. Morse chickens. Mr. Morris was very happy to get Mr. Bill to work on the hen house project. His chickens were running all over the place looking for some shade.

Carlie asked Mr. Bill — can I come with you?

Mr. Bill said — you better ask your mother before you and I go to this job.

Carlie asked her mother — can I ride with Mr. Bill over to Mr. Morrison’s house and watch him build the hen house?

Carlie’s mother said yes you may but don’t stay too long and don’t be a nuisance to Mr. Bill.  So, Mr. Bill and Carlie went over to Mr. Morris’s house and Mr. bill started building the henhouse.

Carlie asked Mr. Bill can we make this one pretty can you put a yellow door and yellow curtains on this hen house?

Mr. Bill said to Carlie — no not today. Mr. Morris wants to be able to see inside the hen house to see his chickens through the window. I’m sorry miss Carlie.

Mr. Bill finished the hen house and it was a very fine hen house indeed and they went back Home.

The next day Mr. Bill made a birdhouse for Carlie’s neighbor. It was a very nice birdhouse but it did not have a yellow door and yellow curtains. Carlie was sad.  She spent time talking to God about what to do.

Now the weekend had come and Mr. Bill had taken a few days of rest. Mr. Bill was the church on Sunday . On Monday Mr. Bill had another task. Carlie was not able to go with him because Carlie went to town with her mother.

When she got home later that day from town, she went and found Mr. Bill. She told Mr. Bill all about the moving stairs that took her to the top floor of the clothing store they were in. She had a beautiful new yellow hat that her mother had bought.

Mr. Bill said come on let me show you something in your backyard. They went back into the backyard together.

Mr. Bill pointed up in the tree and said — what do you think?

Carlie was so surprised. Mr. Bill had made Carlie a treehouse with yellow doors and yellow curtains.

Mr. Bill said I know you were praying about yellow doors and yellow curtains. God told me it was time to build this house for you. I kept the picture you made for me. I made you a tree house with a yellow door and yellow curtains.  I used your picture to guide my hands so your tree house would be just right.

Carlie was very thankful to God and Mr. Bill.  She spent a lot of time that summer with her yellow hat on, playing in that tree house, with a yellow door and yellow curtains.

O’Toole and Hank the Tank were almost asleep when O’Toole’s mom finished the story.

O’Toole smiled and said — I like to hear about your life and things that God does for us. Thank you, mom. It has been a very good day.  The End.

Miss Kitty The Friend-Finder

Deep in the forest on the north side of the Old oak tree The Moss grew velvet soft and green. At the bottom of the tree a busy little chipmunk made his home.  The chipmunks name was Mr Runzalot.

Miss Kitty was friends with  Mr. Runzalot. They talked often. But always talked when Mr. Runzalot was moving around the forest looking for nuts and acorns. He lived a lonely life.

All day long Mr. Runzalot scurried about the forest. He fussed and he fumed when he ran up the trees. He fussed and fumed when he ran down the trees.   Mr. Runzalot was always looking for food for the winter. Every little morsel he found was carefully packed into the back rooms of his home.

Miss Kitty came to visit him one day and noticed that his porch was getting really dirty. She also saw that his house was very messy.

But  Mr. Runzalot was not concerned about his house. He bustled and he rattled amongst the leaves on the forest floor looking for nuts and berries and acorns to store in his snug little home under the root of the old oak tree.  He was much too busy to make new friends or even to talk to his neighbors. About the only person he ever talked to was Miss Kitty.

He did not have time to say things like ‘howdy do’ or ‘nice day isn’t it’ or ‘good morning’ to the animals who lived around him.   The rabbits and birds knew who he was, but didn’t say much to him because he was always so busy.

Every morning a little red robin would sing her song and wake Mr. Runzalot up at sunrise, he would get up and out the door he would go looking for berries and nuts and acorns and good things for the winter.  He had no time for friends.  He was a very busy squirrel but Mr. Runzalot was very lonely.

Then one day after a long day scampering about picking up food for the winter, he came back to his little house. What do you think he saw? Oh my, there was another squirrel and Miss Kitty sitting on his front porch waiting for him to come home.  He did not know what to do. He had no time to visit with another squirrel.

Miss Kitty said — Hi there Mr. Runzalot. I’ve brought you a friend who might be able to help you.

Mr. Runzalot said to Miss Kitty — I don’t have time for friends.

Miss Kitty smiled and said — we’ll be back tomorrow.

The next day the Little Red Robin woke Mr. Runzalot with a beautiful song and out the door he went looking for winter food. When he came back at the end of the day he was very very surprised to see Miss Kitty again.

Miss Kitty said — I want you to meet Miss stays-at-home. She thinks you’re a very nice person, and she would like to help you.

Mr. Runzalot said to Miss Kitty — I don’t have time for friends or for someone who stays at home.

Then  Mr. Runzalot looked at his front porch and noticed it was all nice and clean. And he noticed that the door knocker on his door was all bright and shiny. And he noticed that the window was clean and he could actually see inside of his house.  He went inside and he was amazed, the floor was clean, there was a fire in the fireplace, and there was food on the table waiting for him for the evening dinner. He had no idea what to say.

Miss Kitty said — I’ll leave the two of you to eat dinner, I’ll see you tomorrow.

Mr. Runzalot said — I don’t have time to sweep, I don’t have time to clean, I don’t have time for a friend, all I have time to do is gather food for the winter.

His new friend left after dinner, Mr. Runzalot spent the evening counting his nuts, berries, and acorns.   Then he went to bed. But he didn’t sleep very well.  Mr. Runzalot kept thinking about how nice his house looked.  The next morning the Little Red Robin woke him up with a lovely song and he went out of the house and started gathering more things for the winter. He had a very busy day, but he found lots of stuff. He came back home really tired.

And you know what he found? He opened up his door expecting a cold house.  Instead, and his house was all cleaned up, there was dinner on the table, and there was Miss stay-at-home sitting in the chair by his fire, reading a book.  The windows were washed and the pictures on the wall were all cleaned up and even the bathroom was cleaned up. He was truly amazed.

He put all of his food up he had collected for the day into the back rooms.  Then he sat down with her and they had a nice dinner together. He thought about it for a while and realized that his heart was softening towards Miss stay-at-home.  He realized he was falling in love with her.

Mr Runzalot said to Miss Stay-at-Home – I love you.  Will you marry me? I do not want to be alone anymore.

Miss Stay-at-home said — what took you so long to ask me? Of course I’ll marry you.

The next morning the Little Red Robin sang his song and Mr Runzalot got up but this morning he wasn’t rushing to leave for the day.  He talked with Miss stays-at-home for a little bit and made a plan for the day.  Then he heard his door knock. He went to the door and there stood Miss Kitty.

Miss Kitty said — I have heard that you have married Miss Stay-at-Home. I think you have made a very good decision. I know the two of you will be very happy. God will bless this home, God will bless your marriage. God will bring children to both of your lives. God is smiling right now. I pray that you have You have many good days together. You are no longer lonely and Miss Stay-at-home is not longer lonely.

And so, Mr. Runzalot and Mrs Stay-at-Home lived a very happy life. No longer were they lonely. They had each other.
